Maurizio Pollini played Karlheinz Stockhausen and Beethoven Friday.

When the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont first sent its performers on tour under the Musicians From Marlboro banner in 1965, one of the participants was the violinist Arnold Steinhardt. A year earlier, Mr. Steinhardt had co-founded the Guarneri String Quartet, now one of chamber music’s most enduring ensembles. The quartet regularly plays at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but when Mr. Steinhardt appeared there on Friday night, it was as mentor to a current crop of young Marlboro musicians.

Mr. Steinhardt played second violin in a memorable account of ’s String Quartet No. 8. Playing first violin, the position that carries much of the narrative impetus in this moody, occasionally tormented piece of musical autobiography, was Lily Francis, whose graceful solo lines conveyed a poignant fragility. The violist Yu Jin and the cellist Wendy Law, both accomplished, powerful players, seemed to relish the work’s more obsessive passages.

By comparison, Dvorak’s Piano Quartet in E flat was a sunny frolic. Mr. Steinhardt, Ms. Jin and Ms. Law were joined by the pianist Anna Polonsky, a chamber musician of exceptional refinement. Compared with the Shostakovich, this was slightly rough-hewn. Still, telling details emerged: Ms. Law’s surpassingly sweet solos in the second movement, Ms. Polonsky’s rollicking dulcimer evocations in the third, Ms. Jim’s ardent lines in the finale, Mr. Steinhardt’s dignified contributions throughout.

AMERICAN STRING QUARTET Weill Recital Hall

Looking back was the theme of Friday’s Walter W. Naumburg Foundation concert at Weill Recital Hall — part of a series celebrating past winners of its prestigious prize. And the American String Quartet, which won in 1974, did just that.

First, it looked back to Alban Berg’s Op. 3 quartet, mellow and organic, playing with a dark throatiness from the opening crunchy second violin line, like a footstep in dead leaves: each phrase subtle, reined in, refracted through all the instruments to yield ever new patterns, like colored beads in a kaleidoscope.

Then it looked to the recent past with an emotional “Triptych” written about 9/11 by Robert Sirota, president of the . It is a challenge, today, to convey chaos in a tonal language: the first movement, illustrating the fall of the towers, struggled to go beyond agitation, rising and falling from long-held notes, dying away, that sought to hold together the dispersing clouds of music. The second movement was a sorrowful meditation, while the third sought to make peace with a kind of lullaby that evanesced in fillips of ascending notes.

For the Schubert C major quintet the group looked back to its original cellist, David Geber, who after a wild and slightly muddy first movement coalesced with the others into a single, remarkable organ of sound. Peter Winograd’s first violin sent out questioning phrases while the other players steadily built in intensity; when the phrases returned they had clearly been answered, but the intensity continued to build for the remainder of an edge-of-the-seat performance. MAURIZIO POLLINI

Some people live faster than others. Schubert’s life, it can be argued, was not tragically short but was lived at high velocity. Then there is Maurizio Pollini, who plays piano music at such speed that we can only stand by the roadside and try to catch glimpses of it whizzing past. Elegant, thoughtful and vastly cultured, Mr. Pollini seems to exist in a time continuum all his own. I am sure he hears his own playing with perfect clarity. I wish I could keep up with him.

Listeners at Carnegie Hall on Friday had rare opportunities to catch their breath. One was at the start, in the Stockhausen Klavier stücke Nos. VII and VIII. The first is really about silence, with isolated strokes on the piano acting as boundary markers subdividing the empty spaces. The second speaks a rhapsodic Romantic language but with violent contrasts of bass and treble and in a language removed from the past.

Those wanting to make an early evening of it were probably grateful for the Schumann “Kreisleriana” that came after. When asked by the music, Mr. Pollini can ruminate and linger with great beauty. Elsewhere, he takes the “very” and “extremely” of movements marked “extremely agitated,” “very excited,” “very lively” and “very quick” (I translate from the German) at their word. 1 /n /n

Why Do We Love The Sopranos? Part 2

I'm continuing to think aloud on the puzzling question of... why do we exactly love the brutal Sopranos?

Sopranos know how to "take care of business." When a guy bumps their car from behind and refuses to take any responsibility for it, and challenges them with a self-righteous "sue me!", they don't sue anybody. They settle the score through their own means. And since we had lost untold amounts of time and money in the past in either suing someone or getting sued, we understand the simplicity and "beauty" of the concept.

We know that their kind of "score settling" is not legal. But still we cannot help but take a shine to the kind of "direct justice" dished out by the Sopranos. It is a world in which no legal reforms are needed since everything is settled by brute force. We are aware that civilization cannot survive even for a single day if EVERYONE settled their problems like Sopranos do. However, we still derive a vicarious satisfaction from justice delivered quickly, without any ambiguities.

We also like the "honor code" that Sopranos manage to maintain despite all that depravity and violence, a code that values friendship and loyalty above anything else. Living in a relativistic world in which everything depends on what your lawyer can do against mine, that kind of ABSOLUTE ethics appeals to a primordial sense of morality encoded perhaps into our DNA. We like that too.

We like the guilty pleasures as well, for sure. Expensive dinners in expensive restaurants, fantastic cars, young mistresses, vacations, outings to the race track, and the whole works. Good life.

Last and certainly not the least – we even like the violence, don't we?

We have to admit it. We watch it for the same reason we watch a bloody boxing match or an even bloodier free-fighting competition. Or, watch the car and train wreck and cop chase videos…

There is always something fascinating about the mystery of death and violence that we try to decipher by vicariously going through the experience, through the agency of others like actors, writers, and directors. The Sopranos provides us with that kind of roller-coaster scream of an hormonal experience as well. (Where else are you going to see a guy stuff the severed head of one of his closest friends into a bowling ball bag?)

When The Sopranos is off the air this summer, we'll spend at least a few more years watching its past episodes on DVDs and wondering what happened to Tony, Carmela, or the others who brought us such forbidden and truly sinful pleasures for the last six years. They'll be missed.

11 Jobs That Can Help You Stay Focused On Your Acting Career

1. Try to get work in a casting director or an agent's office. Sometimes in the industry trade papers agents and casting directors advertise for assistants and people to work a few hours a week opening mail and doing office chores. It's a great way to learn what goes on in their offices. You get to see the kinds of mail other actors send in, overhear telephone conversations, and just basically see what it's like first hand.

2. The Actors Connection is an organization in New York that provides a great service to actors by giving them the opportunity to meet and audition for agents, casting directors and other industry professionals who are not always the easiest people to be able to meet. They do this in the form of seminars every evening and often even on Saturdays. During the seminars there are what I call "gate keepers" who keep the time and ensure that all the participants get an equal share of the industry professional's time who is conducting the individual session.

At times AC is looking for people to work, usually flexible hours as one of the "gate keepers". That is also a great way to meet first hand casting directors and agents, listen in on the question and answer sessions before the individual, one on one sessions take place. A great way to learn!

3. In addition, there are other acting schools around the city that look for assistants.

4. Theater companies looking for stage personel and production assistants often with no experience necessary. Prerequisite is to be responsible and a fast learner.

5. There are also a host of casting websites and organizations, such as Actors Access, Breakdown Services, NYCastings as well. If you do a Google search, you will find a slew of others. Why not see if they need help or could use your services?

6. There are also showcases and industry events that are organized to help actors promote their careers. It's a great way to meet casting directors and agents. The organization of those events is a big to do and they need hosts and hostesses to help the event go smoothly. You can find information about such events by simply keeping abreast of what's going on in the industry. Read the trade papers regularly and check the top acting/casting websites.

7. Why not see if the local union offices of SAG, AFTRA and EQUITY could use some help? Find out where their offices are. See if you can find out what they might be looking for. Find out who the person is you need to contact and if your approach is to send a cover letter, then address the person by his name as opposed to "To whom it may concern."

8. Do you have skills that one of the trade papers could be interested in, maybe to work in one of their offices? Could be an idea to contact Backstage, Ross Reports, probably the most read of the industry papers. Have a look on the internet or in the Drama Book Shop in New York to see some of the other possibilities that exist.

9. There are many production companies who are looking for good people with skills.

10. Do you have the skills to form a production company? I know someone, a fellow actor, who has done just that. It's a great way to make industry contacts with people who could also help you further your career as an actor.

11. Do you have the skills to start and run your own small business, form your own company? What do you love to do? Could you turn your hobby into a business? If so, do you know other responsible and reliable people who share your same passion and who have good business skills? If so, maybe you could form your own company together with those people. Why not? As time goes on, you could gradually distance yourself from the daily business of running your small company and dedicate more and more time to acting and promote your acting career.

The whole point of this article is to help you think. If you don't have a steady stream of residual income that will permit you to focus 100% of your time on your acting career and you have to work in the traditional sense to make ends meet, then at least do something that will keep you connected to the industry and at the same time help you grow in some way as an actor.

3 Doors Down "Seventeen Days" Rock Music CD Review

Not sure what's happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Seventeen Days gets. Seventeen Days simply put is one of 3 Doors Down's best CDs to date.

Seventeen Days opens with an outstanding track, Right Where I Belong, that I suspect will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It really is a very nice track.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you've got one of 3 Doors Down's most impressive releases ever.

Overall Seventeen Days is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definetly a worthy addition to any Rock collection. Truly an outstanding Rock CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

While this entire CD is outstanding some of my favorites are track 1, Right Where I Belong, track 3, Let Me Go, and track 6, The Real Life.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 4, Be Somebody. Outstanding!

You will have the advantage of reaching your target audience (movie goers) while not competing with other movies at your film festival. This should be done in conjunction with advertising near or on-site as well. Be smart and use a combination of both. Be sure not to over-saturate sites with your posters. Covering up other posters will put you at a risk of being criticized and might add up to bad publicity for your film.

Macy Gray "Big" Soul Music CD Review

The exceptionally talented Soul artist Macy Gray has released her CD entitled Big. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Macy Gray fans, and Soul fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Big Macy Gray's artistic excellence is on full display as she has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be her best work to date.

Big kicks off with a great track, Finally Made Me Happy, that I anticipate will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It really is a very nice track.

Macy Gray is one of those musicians that has the ability to just bowl you over with her talent. The kind of artist it's really a treat to be able to listen to.

Listen to this CD and I believe you'll find there's not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, the production is simply outstanding, and Macy Gray's voice is in top form. Of particular note on this offering is her amazing rendition of Glad You're Here with Fergie. If you're even mildly into Soul music you'll enjoy this album.

Semi-Tones And Tones On A Piano, Organ And Keyboard

Semitones and tones are distances from one key to another key on a keyboard. For example if we play middle C on the keyboard and then play the next white note to the right which is D then that distance is one tone. For those of you not familiar with a keyboard then get my Lesson 1 e-Book here, which will show a 61 note, keyboard with the correct notes names printed on each key.

The thing to remember when counting semitones and tones on a keyboard is to count the distances and not the notes. A semitone is the closest distance from one note to another note. So again, if we play middle C on a keyboard and want to move one semi-tone to the right the note you should be playing is C sharp that is the black note between C and D. When you first look, at the C and D keys they might appear to be closest to each other but the black notes are placed between the white notes, which make them closer. Now starting from middle C again if you move one semitone to the left, you will notice there is no black key between the white keys so the closest key is B.

Counting semitones on a keyboard is very useful especially for finding chords. For example if you wanted to find C chord which consist of a root, third and a fifth we use distances to find the notes. The distance from the root to the third is four semitones and the distance from the root to the fifth is seven semitones. Now since the root is always the name of the chord in this case C, count four semitones (distances) to the right from C to get E then count seven semitones to the right from C to get G and you have just found your C chord C, E and G and since all major chords (triads) use a root, third and fifth you can find all twelve major chord by counting semitones.

I personally count distances in semitones, that's just my preference. Instead of saying two semitones, you can of course say one tone. It's up to the individual. Remember to count distances and not notes.

Walter Beasley "Won't You Let Me Love You" Smooth Jazz Music CD Review

Not sure what's happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Won't You Let Me Love You gets. Won't You Let Me Love You stated simply is one of Walter Beasley's best CDs to date.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Won't You Let Me Love You has a pleasantly varied, mix of 10 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly superb artist. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are his own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

Overall Won't You Let Me Love You is excellent from beginning to end. One of those CDs that after a few listens the songs are just etched into your memory. A must have for the Smooth Jazz fan. Really sensational from beginning to end.

The Epic Called Ben Hur

The MGM Studio was founded on the success of the original in 1925 and then in 1958 a then huge investment of $15m was risked on the remake of 'Ben Hur'. MGM risked their name and the financial future of the studio with this 'Epic' movie. The reward for taking this risk was enormous with over $80m flowing back into MGM's coffers.

It received collossal critical acclaim and won a then record of 12 Academy Awards, these were best picture, best director ( William Wyler), best actor (Charlton Heston), best supporting actor (Hugh Griffith), Cinematography (Robert Surtees), scoring (Miklos Rozsa), editing (Ralph Winters and John Dunning), costumes (Elizabeth Haffenden), art direction (William Horning and Edward Carfagno), sound recording (Franklin Milton), visual effects (Arnold Gillespie and Robert MacDonald) and last but by no means least sound effects (Milo Lory). The special effects brought a modern look to the movie, especially in two scenes the chariot race and the wonderful sea battle.

The cast which at times reached 50,000 was headed by the king of the 'Epic' movie Charlton Heston who as always showed his great physical and spirtual strength. It had a very strong and powerful supporting cast including Stephen Boyd and Jack Hawkins. It had over 3000 sets and bringing this together proved to be the final straw for Sam Zimbalist the producer who unfortunately died before the completion of the film.

In 1971 it had the largest audience of any film ever, with over 32 million Americans watching on television.

Was this the best 'Epic' of all time or just an over budgeted monster that should never have been made.

The exceptionally talented Smooth Jazz artist Steve Oliver has released his CD entitled 3-D. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Steve Oliver fans, and Smooth Jazz fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of 3-D Steve Oliver's artistic excellence is on full display as he has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be his best work to date.

This one grabs your attention right from the very beginning with Magic World and doesn't let go until the very last note of the very last song See You Soon, which is another great track by the way.

This is a first rate CD, delivering a little something for everyone. I give it two thumbs up. It's quite simply great listening. A must buy for the Smooth Jazz fan.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 4, Chips And Salsa. What a nice track!

Now, when Shakespeare coined that phrase, he was probably referring to someone playing a lute, and not listening to ye old iPod. However, if there is a common thread between Shakespeare's declaration that we all require music and the world's favorite portable MP3 player, it is that the iPod, because of its incredibly convenient design, can constantly feed the world of its hunger for tunes.

Anyone who is on a quest for new and excellent music knows how valuable the iPod is for reaching that goal. The 188 stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188+ stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.

[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].

THE 188 STAGE HERO'S JOURNEY:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

Post the Crossing of the Return Threshold and before the Master of Two Worlds and Selves, a hell of a lot happens that is rarely given mention. The Final Conflict (a metaphor for this stage) follows a distinct process. At the mid point of the Final Conflict, the hero lets go of his old self. This is demonstrated in a number of (metaphoric) ways. In Straw Dogs (1971), Amy wants to go, "let me go." In The Godfather (1972), Michael lies to Kay.

While trying to find his Beverly Hills hotel, a tycoon corporate raider, Edward Lewis, played by Richard Gere, accidently meets Vivian Ward, a Hollywood prostitute. Vivian Ward, played by Julia Roberts, is hired by Edward Lewis as a date for a whole week.

Julia Roberts portrays Vivian Ward brilliantly as a prostitute suddenly taken into the world of the ultra rich where anything you could desire is just a call away. Normally, she has been able to get just enough clients to survive with her drug-using roommate. Since Vivian does not even have a high school diploma, she chose prostitution as the only higher paying alternative to working in fast food restaurants.

Now, Vivian is staying in a hotel suite that has a bathroom about as big as her whole apartment and an unlimited number of people to wait on her. As a date for Edward Lewis, she is swept up in the snobbish, Hollywood culture on Rodeo Drive. After being asked to leave an exclusive boutique, Vivian is desperate to learn how to dress and eat at a high class restaurant. She finds a sympathetic hotel manager at the Beverly Hills Hotel who has his own boutique manager work with Vivian personally from hair to shoes, giving her a stunning and elegant appearance.

Both Edward Lewis and Vivian Ward come from extreme ends of society and could not be more different. However, they do share one thing in common; they both use their clients in a cold, unemotional manner. But later on, what begins as a business contract quickly evolves into to much, much more.

Richard Gere is very convincing as Edward Lewis, showing a cool, calculating manner, totally involved in winning his business deals. He spends almost all day and night on the phone, planning his next move and meeting with his lawyer, never taking a day off. But that changes when Vivian enters the picture.

Over the week, the poor prostitute escorts the rich industrialist to a client dinner, a polo game, and is flown on his private jet to San Francisco to hear an opera for the first time. As can be expected, there are a few twists and turns when things do not go smoothly at each of these events, causing both Vivian and Edward to reconsider who they are and what they should be doing in their lives.

This movie is a delightful romance that will have you guessing what will happen next with this bizarre mix of these two fascinating people.

Pretty Woman is rated R. Parents need to know that this film contains adult themes, strong sexual references, and sexual imagery.

Paul Taylor "Hypnotic" Smooth Jazz Music CD Review

Not sure what's happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Hypnotic gets. Hypnotic simply stated is one of Paul Taylor's best CDs to date.

Hypnotic has a pleasantly varied, mix of 11 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly outstanding artist. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen.

Paul Taylor is one of those musicians that has the ability to just bowl you over with his talent. The kind of artist it's really a treat to be able to listen to.

Listen to this CD and I believe you'll find there's not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, the production is simply outstanding, and Paul Taylor's sax work is in top form. Of particular note on this offering is Hypnotic. If you're even mildly into Smooth Jazz music you'll enjoy this CD.

While the entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 2, Flight 808, track 3, PT Cruiser, track 7, Pendulum

Create A Buzz - If You Build It They Will Come!

Building a music career is hard work. Every day, month and year you repeat the same grind: build the band, write the songs, record the songs, rehearse the songs, perform the songs, promote the band, advertise the band, solicit industry, publicize to the press, build the website, create the message boards, forums, and chat rooms, assemble the street team…it goes on and on until you think your head will surely explode from the mountains of menial tasks that face you, the unsigned artist, each day.

Still, after putting in all of that work a band will hit dry spells, slow times and glass ceilings. Some days, your already slow move forward, seems to retard even further. Sometimes it feels as though you've peaked and will never advance. There are even days you want to blow off all of this tedious monotony, get a job in the electronics department at Target, and call it a day!

But even as your face is smushed up against the glass ceiling of a never-changing cycle of music business grunt work, hope is just over the horizon. See, there is something that you never stopped to think about all the while you were chasing the elusive brass ring of music stardom…all of this time, you were in control. If opportunities have stopped coming your way, then make your own. If you want to be a rockstar, develop a situation you can star in and rock. You have the power and the ability to be anything and everything you have ever wanted to be if you learn to simply create your own buzz.

The following are a few tips that may help you to get started creating your own buzz in order to push past the obstacles and keeping moving down the Yellow Brick Road of musical superstardom:

1.) Create Your Own Gigs---Tired of whining that you never get the gigs you want? You know: good clubs, weekend shows, prime slots, longer sets, decent pay, good bands on the bill, press attending, industry confirming and most importantly, your band headlining. It's ridiculous to waste time complaining, when you could be booking, planning, promoting and playing your dreams gigs right now. Sure it will be a lot of time invested and it may mean putting smaller gigs on hold for awhile in order to promote one giant show, but the payoffs will inevitably outweigh the work…and the best part is, it's all about you. You are the promoter. You are the stars of the night. You pick the date, the times, the bands. You invite the press and the industry. Within a month or two, you could be playing the types of gigs you have always wanted, and all the while getting press, making money, collecting names for your mailing list and building hype for your band that even the stodgiest industry can take notice of.

2.) Join The Ranks Of The Press And/Or The Industry---You know what they say…if you can't beat them, join them. If you want to get industry or press to notice you and your band, what better way than to become a member of the industry or press. Pick up a gig writing for a local magazine and review your friends' bands and the shows you promote. Intern at a record label and meet friends in the industry to invite to your gigs. Start a management/promotion company and book your band and your friends' bands to become better acquainted with clubs and their booking agents. You'll find it will be much easier to deal with industry people when they consider you more of a peer and not just another band asking for help.

3.) Numbers, Numbers, Numbers---It may sound ridiculous but in the entertainment industry (as in any business), your perceived worth is tracked by your numbers. Web posters, gig patrons and listeners of your music all translate to numbers and the big ones impress fans and industry alike. If you want club bookers, managers, magazine editors and A&R to notice you then make sure your numbers are up. Web hits, fan group members, online community friends and people on your personal mailing list all add up to your bankability as a band so keep driving those numbers up and watch the doors swing open wide for you.

4.) Teach, Volunteer, Take Classes, Join Groups---If you want to meet new people, gain different opportunities, and find fresh ways to obtain your goals, then get out where people are doing what you seek and mingle. If you play and instrument, start teaching and get to know the bands of your students. If you see big events happening in your town, volunteer to work them and get to know the management, talent and audience alike. Take classes and join music organizations not only to learn but to network. There is a whole world of entertainment people out there. Get to know some of them and make those folks a part of your band's promotional circle.

By following these tips and others soon you will find that your band is enjoying the opportunities and buzz you were only dreaming of before.
